Started in 2001, the Dot NAME domain name extension is the only one intended for personal web pages only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. Initially, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to acquire john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered third-level names remained online.
